WOODBURY\n \u2014 Litchfield County Computer is expanding its capabilities while \nmaintaining its commitment to quality customer service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Owner Matt Smith told Voices, \u201cMy formal background in computer security gives me the advantage in dealing with threats out there today, from identify theft, Nigerian scams, cross border fraud and more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grouping \nthese threats into the category of \u201cmalware,\u201d Mr. Smith feels it\u2019s \ncritical to educate users and to use layers of protection around \ncomputer systems, both home and business machines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He keeps up \nwith the latest news, such as the \u201cbotnet\u201d problem where hackers want to\n take advantage of the power of high speed internet connections that \nresidents use to power their illegal activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not enough\n to just buy anti-virus software.\u201d He advises using additional software \nsuch as anti-spyware and a firewall, creating several barriers around a \ncomputer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen malware comes in, it may get through one layer but be stopped at the next. Computer security is very complex and requires formal training. Things change rapidly and one million pieces of malware are released every day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is happy to help users learn how to protect themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf\n a user travels to websites that are likely to be infected, the risk of \ngetting the computer that is surfing the website infected is going to go\n up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGetting a computer infected is all about money… [such as]\n the fake antivirus program. These things look like their legit copies, \nbut are designed to make you think that your computer is infected and \nget you to send $90 plus to the scammers that wrote the program to \n\u2018clean\u2019 your computer, when in reality it is the fake antivirus program \nthat is the infection that needs to be cleaned off!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With his \nnewly expanded capabilities, Mr. Smith can get more work done, faster, \nand he is working on providing cloud-based computing services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noting \u201cIf you don\u2019t have your computer, you don\u2019t do business,\u201d Mr. Smith provides backup as well as restoration services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople\n notice their computer is slow and tell themselves it\u2019s because the \ncomputer is slow. But, computers don\u2019t age. The problem is either \nmalware or problem with the hard drive. It\u2019s mechanical with many moving\n parts and those wear out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said it\u2019s always less expensive in terms of time and money to prevent a problem than ask him to recover data and equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Customers can call for an appointment at 203-263-2793 and Mr. Smith can do a preliminary assessment over the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\n lists all services on his web site, www.litchfieldcountycomputer.com, \nbut is happy to help customers who have questions or requests beyond \nwhat they see online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His love of computers began when he was \nfive and his parents got him the tool so he could do his schoolwork. \u201cMy\n handwriting isn\u2019t the greatest. I enjoy the fact that you can make the \nmachine do what you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow, in my business, I enjoy seeing a \nmessed up computer, not running, leave here fast and on it\u2019s way back to\n what it\u2019s supposed to be doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also wants to be \nindependent; as someone with a disability, he wants to make an effort \nand succeed in the world rather than rely on the system to get by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why I went to college and own my own business,\u201d he said, noting that the program at Western Connecticut State University was the first in the country to have an undergraduate computer security program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
